Hi folks, I’m Jon Mullen the Energy Evangelist. This month we're looking at savings on your HVAC resources (that’s your Heating, Ventilation and Air Con), and today we’re talking something really simple but it’s definitely one for the long term.

If you want to create shade from the summer heat then plant some trees or large bushes around your building especially on the south side of your building. This will also provide protection from strong winter winds.

Or the more modern architectural approach would be to add overhanging protection from the sun. Some people would call this a porch. The french might call it a brise-soleil, or a sun breaker. Most people think this is just an architectural feature of a building, but it actually reduces heat gain within that building by deflecting sunlight and in turn will reduce your air con costs.
