Is It Too Hot Yet?

Hi folks, I’m Jon Mullen the Energy Evangelist. This month we're looking at savings on your HVAC resources (that’s your Heating, Ventilation and Air Con), and today we’re talking about controlling your thermostat.

People are starting to realise they can use energy in a different way. Some new heating systems and thermostats have a range of energy saving features using mobile and web apps. They can analyse your usage or connect to motion / presence sensors that detect when people are present. Or even more amazing, they know you are going to get home in the next 10 minutes. Let the system manage your room temperature and get on with running your business. Or if a smart sensor is not available, then make sure you have a 7 day multi-step timer to switch your systems on and off when you need it. But also ensure you make changes every time the clocks move forward or back! Quite often these sensors don’t know about time changes.

In addition, give a responsible person the job of controlling the system. If you have a number of people in an office one person will like it hotter and another will be too hot. Choose the diplomat in the room to make sure they all can get on with their work.
